NSCAD certificates are ideal for people who want to pursue studies after their undergraduate degree. They prepare you for graduate studies and build on your professional certifications.

Steps to apply for the certificate programs.

STEP 2. APPLICATION FEE

A non-refundable application fee of $70 is required. Pay online at apply.nscad.ca

STEP 3. PERSONAL STATEMENT

Write a brief one-page essay explaining the reasons why you wish to attend NSCAD University. Your essay should discuss the prior experience that you bring to the university. You might also want to touch on the skills and knowledge that you hope to gain, and where you think your NSCAD education might lead you in the future.

STEP 4. SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS

An academic record of current and previous study is required from all applicants. All transcripts must be official and received directly by email (admissions@nscad.ca) or mail from the issuing institution. At least one of these transcripts must show that the applicant completed an undergraduate degree.

There is no application deadline for this program. If accepted, students are allowed to enroll for classes starting in the next semester. When received and completed, applications are dated and are forwarded in chronological order to the Certificate Admissions Committee. Incomplete applications are held for completion. The Certificate Admissions Committee is the sole judge of decisions regarding admission to the certificate program.

Application procedures

Acceptance into the program presumes eligibility for the Initial Teachers Certificate with the Nova Scotia Department of Education or its equivalent and at least one year full-time teaching experience within a public or approved private school setting. Admission to the certificate program is based on the review of the application materials:

Following program completion, students will submit a letter of application for a change in teacher certification classification to the Registrar, Teacher Certification, and Nova Scotia Department of Education. A supporting official transcript confirming completion of all courses, proof of the certificate award and required fee must accompany the letter of application. The Nova Scotia Department of Education does not permit double-counting courses to fulfill requirements of an upgrading program. Any course work credited toward other Post-secondary programs may not be used to meet the requirements of the Visual Arts Certificate for Teachers.

 A non-refundable application fee of $70 is required

STEP 3. PERSONAL STATEMENT

Write a brief one-page essay that articulates your program focus and how the visual arts will enhance your teaching practice..

STEP 4. SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS

STEP 5. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION APPROVAL

Submit Department of Education proof of approval from Teacher Certification for Application for Approval – Upgrading Program. The application form is available at certification.ednet.ns.ca. Send approval to admissions@nscad.ca

STEP 6. COPY OF TEACHER’S CERTIFICATE

Upload a copy of proof of the Nova Scotia Department of Education Initial Teachers Certificate or its equivalent (Note to out-of-province applicants: Applicants are responsible for ascertaining the acceptance of this certificate in their province.)

STEP 7. PRINCIPAL’S LETTER OF REFERENCE

A letter of recommendation must be sent directly from the principal of a school where you have taught.

STEP 8. TEACHER’S CV/RESUME

Upload your resume/CV of teaching experiences including years and subject areas taught.

Completed applications are dated and reviewed in chronological order by the Certificate Admissions Committee. The Certificate Admissions Committee is the sole judge of decisions regarding admission to the certificate program.

Applications are accepted for this program on an ongoing basis. The program can start in the Fall, Winter, or Summer semesters. Please apply no later than one month before the start of the semester in which you wish to commence the program.

STEP 3. STATEMENT OF INTENT

State the direction of your practice, and your purposes and intentions in seeking to enter the PBAC Program at NSCAD University. Maximum length is 500 words.

STEP 4. PROOF OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

Applicants for whom English is a second language must arrange for the results of an English Language test to be sent directly to NSCAD. Refer to English Language Requirement for further information on accepted tests and the required scores.

STEP 5. SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS

STEP 6. SUBMIT PORTFOLIO

Submit a portfolio of not more than 20 digital images representative of current work. A numbered list of titles, date, media and dimensions of each work must also be included with all portfolios.
